Well… by now many of you know that I’m a big fan of Warcraft in general as a franchise. I have the odd book, comic book, action figure and even a tattoo. It’s arguably the game I’ve played the most in my life, hands down.
And yet, it’s been years since I’ve touched anything related to Warcraft, and in this episode you’ll be able to see why. Between lousy plot and meta-plot decisions, lousy game design decisions, and Activision Blizzard’s dismal performance as a company (with its numerous sexual harassment and other human rights abuses allegations), WoW went downhill.
I’m not just saying this on a whim: we see it reflected in the numbers. From being the supreme titan among online video games with more than 13 million active subscribers at the time of Wrath of the Lich King between 2008 and 2010, today the game has about 2 million players.
Of course, I wish I had 2 million readers, but in this industry, and for such a massive game, that’s a pretty poor number.
I have no idea what the future of the franchise is going to be. I would love to see a revival of Warcraft. And I wouldn’t like to see it in WoW. This game came out in 2004, almost 20 years ago. It’s time to let it die once and for all.
I leave you with one of the most rant podcast of all 4 hours:
